1. President’s welcome
David reiterated Carl’s welcome to the 2023 Annual General Meeting and summarised his report emphasising his sincere thanks to Carl and the Committee for all the work they put in to running the Club.
Report
Looking back on the 2023 season, it was one of consolidation for the three men’s teams, all of which maintained their league status. It is also encouraging to see that all the Club’s youth teams, both girls and boys, did well during the season.
I was delighted that following the last two President’s Day matches featuring County disability teams, that the Club has been acknowledged by the Farnham 2024 magazine with a feature about disability cricket at Rowledge. I would like to thank Dave Royan for his outstanding commitment to disability cricket.
I would like to thank all coaches and volunteers who make Rowledge such a successful community club. My thanks also go to Carl and the management team for all their hard work throughout the season. It is encouraging to note that there are nominations for the management team which should ease the burden on the current group.
Let us look forward to another good season in 2024.
David Metcalfe – RCC President
2. Apologies for absence
Apologies were received fromBeth Eyres, Chris Yates snr and Dave Royan.

4. To receive the Chairman’s Report 2023
Carl summarised his report which had previously been circulated. He remarked that the change of trustees had been a lengthy administrative process, once again thanked our previous trustees Paul Brook, Graeme Keel and Bob Blightman and welcomed the new trustees Bill Nichols, Lenka Drablow and Roddy Wells.
Report
It is that time again for Rowledge to hold its annual AGM.
I know times are hard at present with constant changes to the economy, and in 2023 we held a lot of prices on par with 2022, unfortunately doing this we ate into our reserves which we knew we would. In 2024 we need to see what can be done to try and slowly increase them, so we keep in line with our constitution.
I would like to thank Richard Westaway for his constant and assiduous review of all expenditures. This focus on our costs will have to continue in 2024, although we propose a small rise in membership fees for 2024 as it stayed the same for the last two years.
No club can survive without sponsors so thanks to all those who continued to support us in 2023 and for those who joined us, your money, support, and expertise is worth so much to us. I am always looking to expand our sponsors so do get in touch if you want to be part of the Club and help us improve.
Our Friday nights were well attended, and I thank all who came along to enjoy a drink, eat pizza and burgers. This will continue into 2024. Let’s hope the evenings start well with warm weather so we can enjoy ourselves in May. I do urge you all though, please do visit and purchase from the bar, rather than bringing your own. If there is something that you want, please get in touch and we will see what can be done to get it stocked.
As you know, all our coaches put in a lot of effort for free and we are always looking for new ones to run a junior group. The club desperately need new coaches in all junior age groups (reception to year 3), without more parents stepping forward these age groups may not be able to run in future seasons. Any help is much appreciated, please do come forward!
Cricket is why we join, and I am so pleased that our Youth sides did so well this year, in boys, girls and mixed. I hope they all enjoyed it and cannot wait to start winter nets in 2024 then Friday night cricket in May. Please do share that we have space for players on a Friday in most junior age groups, so spread the word among friends or within Rowledge School.
Disability cricket has continued to grow in 2023, and it was great that it was the featured match at our annual President’s Day in the summer. We will be holding more games at Rowledge as we continue to grow this part of the club.
Our three senior sides once again did the Club proud, with all three holding their status in the leagues. I can tell you that to get three sides out each week, especially in May when students are still at Uni or taking GCSE and A Levels is a massive challenge to the club and especially to the three captains.
Lastly thank you to the Management Committee for supporting me with your constant hard work that keeps the Club running. We have a fantastic club, but there are areas we need to improve so please do not be shy, approach me with any ideas you have, regardless of how small or silly you may think they are. I would love to hear about them.
Thanks – Carl Baker – RCC Chairman
Peter Brinsden thanked Carl for his continued dedication to the Club.
5. To receive, and if approved, adopt the Accounts for 2023, with the Examiner’s Report
Richard Westaway presented the accounts and summarised his report.
a) Total income for the year was £90,560 compared with £82,756 in the previous financial year. The principal reasons for the increase were catering income, (mainly the bar), and grants/donations. These figures exclude restricted grants which appear in the Club Development Fund. Thanks are due to Carl and Haidee for their efforts in securing various grants and sponsorship monies.
b) Total expenditure for the year was £93,329 (excluding Club Development expenditure). This is much higher than the previous year when the figure was £72,121. Major factors for this year’s increase were the introduction of a new admin system, increased wages, catering costs (mainly the bar), ground maintenance costs and electricity costs.
c) Ground Maintenance. Costs rose from £13,704 in 2022 to £20,550 in 2023 – an increase of £6,846. However, these figures were distorted this year because Autumn renovations were carried out in October 2022 costing £4,102, (excluding VAT) and in September 2023 costing £2,479 (excluding VAT). Both sets of works therefore fell in the same financial year. Figures should look better in 2024.
d) Overall result is a £2,769 deficit over the 2022/2023 period, compared with a surplus of £10,635 in the previous financial year. Note comments re ground maintenance above.
e) Bank – Careful management of expenditure has meant that we continue to have a solid bank position as of 30th September 2023, with funds well in excess of the Management Committee Reserve policy, being a minimum of £10K in the bank. The balance is lower than as at 30 September 2022, in part due to significant items of capital expenditure, (see below).
f) Capital Expenditure – Major items of expenditure in 2023 included the following:
Refurbishment of gents and disabled toilets, funded from restricted reserves.
Artificial pitch, (80% funded by ECB grant)
Bowling machine
g) The Bar – This made a profit of £4,802 in 2023, compared to £7,173 in 2022. This is despite a 20% increase in sales income after deduction of transaction fees. Bar stock costs increased by 49% and labour costs increased by 89%, mainly due to the appointment of a bar manager to relieve Carl. Some bar prices will inevitably have to be increased this year.
h) Donations – These amounted to £7,206 in 2023, compared to £3,077 in 2022. The 2023 figure included single donations of £5000 and £500, plus a legacy of £1,000. It seems unlikely that we will receive these kinds of donations this year. Without these large donations the deficit for 2023 would have been much higher. The tax we were able to reclaim on Gift-Aid donations fell from £389 in 2022 to £106 in 2023. It appears that since the introduction of our new Admin system, we are getting fewer donations when members are paying their subscriptions.
i) Upcoming major expenditure – I am not aware of any plans for major capital expenditure at the present time.
j) Development Fund – The total amount in this fund as at 30th September 2023 amounted to £401 which is the remaining balance of a grant received from Esso Petroleum for U11/13s coaching, kit, and equipment. The funds carried forward from the year ending 30/09/2022 for disability cricket and pavilion improvements were all spent in 2023. A further grant of £500 was received from Esso in October 2023; £500 from the ECB in January 2024 for disability cricket.
k) Membership subscriptions – Fees were not increased in 2023 despite a very high level of inflation at the start of the season. Inflation persists, albeit at a lower level. Unfortunately, it will be necessary to increase fees this year to protect our finances, and our ability to maintain the high standard of our ground and facilities.
l) To Sum it up- 2023 was a slightly disappointing year financially. The club does, however, remain in good financial shape. We are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors. We will need to continue to manage our finances carefully. Inflation will undoubtedly mean we are likely to incur further significant increases in our costs.
Richard thanked Lenka Drablow for acting as an independent examiner and reviewing the accounts.
Carl expressed a great deal of thanks to Richard for all his work on the finances.

1. President’s welcome
David reiterated Carl’s welcome to the 2022 Annual General Meeting and summarised his report emphasising his sincere thanks to Carl and the Committee for all the work they put in to running the Club.
Report
I was delighted at the 2021 AGM to be invited to be the Club’s President, a club that my family and I have been associated with for over 30 years.
2022 was the hottest summer we have seen since 1976. Scoring for the 2nd XI, I can only remember 20 minutes of rain during the whole season. Only a handful of matches in the Youth section were rained off.
The Club had a good season across all Senior, Youth and Girl’s teams and I was lucky enough to watch matches across all sections of the Club. I was particularly pleased to see a number of ‘Youth’ players picking up awards at the Senior Presentation Evening. All the Club’s coaches and team managers should be encouraged and delighted as this is a testament to all their hard work.
My congratulations go to Chris Norris and the 3rd XI for gaining promotion to the Hampshire League Division 4 North.
During the summer the Club was proud to host both a Disability County Match between Surrey and Hampshire (President’s Day) followed two weeks later by a Ladies County Match featuring Hampshire and Oxfordshire.
Finally, my thanks go to Carl and the Management Committee for all their hard work throughout the season. Having had a number of years where I have not been so involved I have been surprised at how much work now goes into running a community cricket club of this size.
We are very lucky to have so many willing volunteers across all sections of the Club and my thanks go to you all.
Let us look forward to another good season in 2023.
David Metcalfe
2. Apologies for absence
Apologies were received from Chris Yates, Ben Wish, Richard Fulham, Wyatt Ramsdale, Matt Johnson, Bob Blightman, Chris Norris and Rupert Preece.
3. To approve the Minutes of the AGM 2021
There being no questions or additional matters arising the minutes of the 2021 AGM were approved.
Proposer Haidee Goodwin Seconder Mike Hinchliffe
The vote to approve the minutes was carried by a show of hands
4. To receive the Chairman’s Report 2022
Carl summarised his report emphasising the fantastic summer of cricket we had this season without one Friday night being cancelled. He thanked our retiring Trustees Paul Brook and Graeme Keel with additional thanks to Bob Blightman for his tireless work on the Club database for so many years without which the Club would not exist today. He also thanked David Gill and David Metcalfe for their continued support and Richard Westaway for helping to maintain a healthy bank balance through the season.
Report
I am so pleased we can hold this AGM in 2022, I can’t tell you how much more time it gives us to get things ready for next season by holding it in December.
I know times are hard at present with constant changes to the economy, so as a Club we have also had to see where we can save costs. I would like to thank Richard Westaway for his constant review of all expenditures and as a result our accounts look healthy for the season. This focus on our costs will have to continue in 2023, but I can confirm as a committee we propose to hold the prices for membership.
No club can survive without sponsors so thanks to all those who continued to support us in 2022 and for those who joined us, your money, support, and expertise is worth so much to us. I am always looking to expand our sponsors so do get in touch if you want to be part of the Club and help us improve.
What weather we had in 2022, with it being so warm, not one Friday night was cancelled (sorry coaches) and it was good to see so many people enjoying the warm evenings. I hope you enjoyed the bar; the Inches Cider was a big success, and I am planning to change the Fosters to a premium lager for 2023. I do urge you all though, please do visit and purchase from the bar, rather than bringing your own. Our takings are not back to pre-covid levels, and this is the biggest revenue stream to the Club.
We introduced the Pizza oven in August, and it was an instant success so expect to see it out more again in 2023. This year there were no music nights, but they will be back in 2023 so watch your emails for more social events being planned.
As you know, all our coaches put in a lot of effort for free and we are always looking for new ones to run an age group. The Club desperately need new coaches in all Junior age groups (reception to year four), without more parents stepping forward these age groups may not be able to run in future seasons. Any help is much appreciated, please do come forward!
Cricket is why we join, and I am so pleased that our Youth sides did so well this year, in boys, girls and mixed. I hope they all enjoyed it and can’t wait to start winter nets in 2023 and start Friday night cricket next May. Please do share that we have space for players on a Friday in most Junior age groups, so spread the word among friends and within Rowledge School.
Disability cricket has continued to grow in 2022, and it was great that it was the featured match at our annual President’s Day in the summer. I heard that even a Love Island contestant showed up to play, which took some of the younger guests by surprise.
Our (young) Women’s Team continued to do well for the Club in 2022 with them winning eight out of eight matches played and finishing second in their League this season. Congratulations to the women and girls and their coaches, this flourishing Women’s Team comes as a result of many years of hard work by the current players and coaches in developing girl’s cricket at Rowledge.
Our three Men’s Senior sides once again did the Club proud, especially our 3rds, who were division champions. Congratulations and many thanks to Chris Norris and Rupert Preece, joint captains, for this great achievement. Thank you to the other skippers, Ben Wish (1sts), Chris Yates Jnr and Ian Metcalfe (2nds), who also put out competitive sides each week, with the 2nds very close to promotion and the 1sts finishing mid table – I did get a little carried away when the 1sts were top for so long.
We now have more Youth players than ever before playing in our Senior teams (Men’s and Women’s) which is great to see and shows that the hard work of the Junior and Youth coaches is paying dividends. Everyone puts in a lot of hard work to make it happen and I hope that all the players enjoyed it and will be back in 2023. Please do let your friends know that we are always looking for new Senior players. I am sure you are proud to play for RCC and your experiences are the best way to sell the Club to others.
It was sad to see Carlo Bruno, a mainstay of the 3rds for many seasons, leave our Club and head to Australia during 2022. I wish his family well as they start their new adventure.
There are a few changes to the Club next year, Bob Blightman, Graeme Keel and Paul Brook are stepping down as Trustees. Sincere thanks to them for their support and guidance. Also, a special note to Bob, who is stepping down after many years as our Membership Secretary, we would not be here without his tireless work behind the scenes in making sure we had a database that captured you all.
Lastly thank you to the Management Committee for supporting me with your constant hard work that keeps the Club running. And finally, my thanks to David Metcalfe for his first year as President and his open door policy for me to discuss ideas.
We have a fantastic club, but there are areas we need to improve so please don’t be shy, approach me with any ideas you have, regardless of how small or silly you may think they are. I would love to hear about them.
Thanks – Carl Baker – RCC Chairman
Peter Brinsden thanked Carl for his continued dedication to the Club.
Peter raised the issue that if we risk assessed the Club, our greatest vulnerability is our over reliance on Carl. It is felt by Peter and David Gill that Carl’s number one priority for next season should be to put a bar manager in place and review bar staff management, organisation, remuneration and working hours so that it does not fall to Carl to run the bar/lock up every Friday. The additional cost of promoting a current bar staff member to manager would not be significant. To bring in a new manager would be more of a financial consideration although would be affordable and should not be considered preventative. Carl appreciated everyone’s comments and will work on the options.
5. To receive, and if approved, adopt the Accounts for 2022, with the Examiner’s Report
Richard Westaway presented the accounts and summarised his report.
a) Total income for the year was £82,756. This is significantly higher than the previous year when activities were severely affected by coronavirus restrictions. This figure excludes restricted grants which appear in the Club Development Fund. Thanks are due to Carl and Haidee for their efforts in securing various grants and sponsorship monies.
b) Total expenditure for the year was £72,121 (excluding Club Development expenditure). This is much higher than the previous year when activities were somewhat restricted due to coronavirus.
c) Overall result is a £10,635 surplus over the 2021/2022 period, after the club’s development expenditure is taken into account. The surplus was in no small part due to a profit of approximately £7k made by the bar. Increased activity at the Rec and a dry summer helped.
d) Bank – Careful management of expenditure has meant that we continue to have a solid bank position as of 30th September 2022, with funds well in excess of the Management Committee Reserve policy, being a minimum of £10K in the bank. The balance is marginally lower than as at 30 September 2021.
e) Upcoming major expenditure – We will incur additional costs associated with a new membership database and a new artificial cricket strip, although we are seeking a grant to offset some of the cost of the latter.
f) Development Fund – The total amount in this fund as at 30th September 2022 amounted to £8,395, made up of £3,395 remaining from grants received for disability cricket, and £5,000 unused legacy monies reserved for pavilion enhancements. Quotes are currently being obtained for work to be carried out on the disability toilet and gents’ toilet, which could be funded by the development fund.
g) To sum up – 2022 was a good year financially. We are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors. The Club remains in good financial shape. We will need to continue to manage our finances carefully. Inflation will undoubtedly mean we are likely to incur significant increases in our costs.
Richard thanked Lenka Drablow for acting as an independent examiner and reviewing the accounts and in addition for her kind assistance with their preparation and for sharing her great knowledge of the Club from her time as treasurer for which he is very grateful.
Peter expressed a great deal of thanks to Richard for all his work on the finances and Carl seconded Peter adding his huge gratitude for the speed and efficiency of the accounts preparation for 2022.

Proposer to elect en bloc Carl Baker Seconder Dave Royan
Re-election of Vice-Presidents en-bloc was carried by a show of hands.
There followed a proposal by Carl Baker to elect Bob Blightman as Honorary Life Member. Carl and the Committee are very sad indeed to say goodbye to Bob as our Membership Secretary, without Bob’s database there would be no Club, however the Club feel that reliance on just one person to support and maintain the Club membership database is too much of a risk and so the database has been outsourced to a third party Company.
Seconder Dave Royan
Election of Bob as Honorary Life Member was carried by a show of hands
There was a second proposal by Carl Baker to elect David Gill as Honorary Life Member. David has been part of the Club from his coaching days to his time as the Club President; he knows everything about the Club and is a big asset to the Club. Carl expressed his greatest thanks to David for his continued involvement in the Club.
